Our Book

The Wild Birds Flying Book is a 182-page coffee table book of distinctive photographs featuring songbirds in flight set against a pure white background. To obtain access to and photograph the birds, Paul Nelson travels to nature centers and other locations where scientists and researchers band birds. After the necessary measurements and observations are made and recorded, the birds are ready for release back into the wild. At this point they are brought to Paul’s camera setup where they are released by way of a runway, breaking a laser sensor that trips the camera and high-speed flash system. For each bird that is banded and released, there is only that one split-second opportunity to capture the photographic image.

In the book, five section dividers display different habitat images and information on what birds need to thrive. There is a behind-the-scenes section at the back to express gratitude to all who have helped on the project. And an index is included that gives information on each species that appears in the book.

To fund the printing and design of our book we are launching a kickstarter campaign. Details on pledge amounts and rewards will be listed there. The minimum pledge amount will earn you one book and higher amounts will be rewarded with books, card sets and art prints of your choice.
